THRESHOLDS
Ever walk into a room with focused intention only to stop mid-step and think… wait, why am I here again? It feels like a small, almost comical glitch. We pause, look around, and try to piece together what we came for.
But in that pause, something interesting happens: we become aware. Not of the task, but of ourselves. Standing there, present. A little disoriented, maybe… but also a little bit more awake.
What if those moments aren’t failures of memory at all, but small invitations to return to the invisible essence of ourselves? These are “threshold moments.” Opportunities to remember our true nature.
Every time you cross a threshold, quietly remind yourself: “I am already awake as awareness itself.” Over time, this builds a continuity of presence that diminishes those long stretches of spiritual forgetfulness.
Start with doorways. Lightly touch the side of the frame with your fingertips. Let that tactile sensation be the reminder that pulls you from your thoughts and awakens the presence of pure being.
Once you master the physical threshold, expand it to every transition. Each shift becomes a chance to practice this ancient art of remembering not to forget:
Feeling the shift in temperature as you step outside. Remember.
Pausing after you sit in the car but before you turn the key. Remember.
Noticing the moment your body settles into a chair. Remember.
Reaching for your phone—especially then. Remember again.
And when the phone rings, pause. Take a breath, drop your shoulders, and smile from your true nature, from that part of you that is always already aware, just waiting for you to check in and remember the stillness we all share.
Some reminders…

Beautiful ! This is also that moment while meditating when we go: Oh! I'm supposed to be watching my breath, ok, back to that. And also the moment in a popular Buddhist practice called: noting, when we "note" what we're doing and what is happening. Also the Hindu practice of noting that exactly in between an inhale and an exhale, there is a "special moment". It's very simple, not complicated. It's aware of being aware. It's the overlay of the thought that there is watching what is happening; that thought overlaying the ongoing conduct of living.
Great advice! We've been in the habit for years of pausing before a meal, but adding more opportunities for checking in is a great idea. Thanks, as always.
